What are stateless, and stateful iterators?

I would like to know what stateless and stateful iterators mean as I don’t understand what the Lua manual is talking about

I could be wrong (lua isn't my native language ;) ) but it looks like a stateful iterator is an iterator that remembers what iteration it is on, while a stateless does not.
