Making the thumbstick 2D?

I'm trying to make my game as mobile compatible as possible, but I'm having one problem. Everything works fine on the pc, because I just turn off the keys I don't want the players to press, but on mobile it's this gosh darn dynamic and normal thumbstick. How would I make the thumbstick only go left and right.

I don't want code, I want an explanation.
