Giant ray that fires down on a map? (raycasting)

I've taken a few cracks at this but it was months ago and I no longer have my scripts.

This question is simply me asking A: Is it possible to fire a giant ray down on the map constantly, that effects players when they touch it (like when they are outside of a building or something) B: Does anyone have any helpful links or advice for doing this?

(I AM NOT ASKING FOR A SCRIPT)

A ray is a line that goes in an infinite direction on a side, and a line is 2D, so you cannot increase it's width. hiimgoodpack 2009 — 6y

You can fire a ray down on every single individual player and see if the ray is able to come into contact with any of their body parts. Firing a "giant ray" down on the map seems really laggy and intangible.
