What are Player Points even used/applicable to anything?

The way ROBLOX explained as PS Trophies or Xbox Achievements made absolutely no sense to me considering the way points are made... And how does it apply to players since they are created for the developer of the game. Can someone please explain this to me?

The idea behind points is as following.

When someone buys something at your place, the place owner gets Player Points to spend. I will look up what this ratio is and if this can then be spread among all places of that owner or only for the universe that place is in.

The idea is then that these points are awarded to players which do something special in your game. In a shooter, for example, one could award points for someone who does something exceptional, such as getting 6 head shots in a minute or getting more than 50 kills in one game.

The biggest criticism to Player Points though is that developers can only award them to players when they have player points to award - and to award player points, people need to buy stuff in that game. Therefore, creating a reliable mechanism to add those points is very hard, as you need to check if there are points to spend. People can even end up getting no points while completing a challenge, putting them in a queue so points are awarded when ready (read: things are bought).

On the other hand, Roblox needs a system to limit the amount of points given. For example, if there would not be a limit, people would be handing out 10k points for getting 1 kill for example, while another game only awards one point. How I think of it is that the general idea is that high earning games also have good quality and thus have more points to award. The idea is good - we must have some way to limit the player points, but my opinion is that it is better to create Per-Place Player Points, just like Apples Game Center works, for example...

Currently, it is in beta and everything is subject to change. Let's wait until it is released and see if any changes are made! :)

PlayerPoints and the new leaderboard will make players feel special if they get a lot of player points in one game. For example, if someone gets a lot of player points in Apoc. Rising, they will be at the top of the leaderboard. Roblox says that pps are not "Currently a currency" meaning that in the future, you may be able to get rewards for pps.

Player Points are not per-place, but are global and therefore one cannot say that someone is good in apoc if they have a lot of points :) jobro13 980 — 10y

Player Points do use Places as buffers, though. That is, if people buy enough items to generate 100 points in a game, the game's owner sees none of it until those points are given out by the game. adark 5487 — 10y
