What does a stepping motor do?

I tried to put a brick on top of a brick with a stepping motor and nothing happened, then when I changed the parameters of the top surface there was a slight vibration when I jumped on it. I just want to know what it does because I found a forum which was basically the only advice on it, and the people on it just spammed about Quenty posting on it.
