How do I edit the animations of a custom character?

What I need is to know how to change the walk, idle, jump, etc animations of a custom rig. I have tried using Humanoid Descriptions, I have tried replacing the animations in the default animation script, I have even tried making my own animation script, but none of them work. Please tell me in the comment if you know how to do this.
