How can i prevent player from picking up more than one of an item?

I'm making a game where you find tools and items on the ground. I would like the player to only be able to pick up one type of gun, secondary weapon, grenade, etc. at a time. How could I go about doing this? Also, is it possible to turn off the backpack button but not the inventory hotkeys?
