So I want to explore the innerworkings of Lua and I heard metatables and metamethods were a great place to start. I was wondering what they are, what they do, and how they work. I can't find any tutorials anywhere on the matter so I was wondering if someone could tell me what they are or maybe give me links to some tutorials.

Do a google search. You must not have searched very hard. There are many different previous Scripting Helpers questions on this topic.
Not only that, but there are plenty of different examples on other websites.
