May someone people explain DataStore using (pretty much only) layman's terms?

I'm attempting to create a sandbox tycoon game (totally original, right?). I know I need to learn about DataStore and how to store player data, but it's so complex, not even PeasFactory's video helped me out, nor any other video. Some please elaborate on this.
