What does the code key:lower mean and what does it do?

All it does is return the string given in lowercase format
local letter = "ABCD"
local lowercase = letter:lower()
print(lowercase) --Prints 'abcd'
Hope this helped!

The lower function just lowercases a string. e-e Literally, that's all it does. XP

Are you talking about the mouse key pressed event? If so this is the old system that used strings to represent the key pressed, since it also supported capital letters you would lower the strings case so that it would work either way.
We should now be using the http://wiki.roblox.com/index.php?title=API:Class/UserInputService as the mouse key events are deprecated.
