Title says it all really, I need to be able to transfer the "pointer" or variable to a part from the server to the client without actually passing the part, because there would be potentially hundreds of models involved and I don't want to deal with latency or lag.
I've thought about sending the "path" to the object over eg sending "workspace.somemodel.whatever.part-12Uef4ak201t" but don't know if there is a better solution. Any ideas?

Why do you want to pass a "pointer" but not the data it points to? What do you want to do with the "pointer"?
I don't think roblox will pass the part the way you are thinking, passing the part should be ok.
You can't send an instance over if it hasn't been parented to something the client can acces (No parent will also not work). Keep that in mind.
Instances are passed by reference both between scripts and across the network. As long as the same entity exists on the server and the client, you can just send the variable which refers to the object - this won't copy the whole object over the network, only the reference.
Basically this would be the server sending a list of what parts to access in the workspace locally. I have FE on.
