When starting out, the best way is to continuously read the Wiki and always script things. Sometimes make something easy to your ability and other times do your best to make something you don't think you can entirely do then get some help if you're stuck.
Most beginners should use Youtube to find some tutorials others post so you may get a better broken down way to do something. The wiki isn't always great. (I suggest peasfactory)
After you're good with Lua, the best way to keep everything fresh in your mind is to teach other people.
One more thing, don't be scared to keep the wiki open while you code and always do your best to fix your own errors before coming here and asking, you wont learn everything instantly it will take time.

Grab free models and study as well as edit them to do something else (ie have a goal in mind). You will be referencing the wiki and forums a lot as well as making a lot of errors, but that's expected.
repeat scripting things try new things aswell.... search for tutorials if there is.
