This website is for specific questions you have about ROBLOX Lua. If you really want to learn how to script, learn how to google 'how do i learn how to script' first.

Here are some great resources that will help you learn how to script on ROBLOX.

  • Roblox Wiki - It is probably THE BEST website you can use to learn how to script. It will teach you the basics of printing to taking you to how to add developer products to your game. It is packed with tutorials and if you are to ask a lot of scripters they most likely will say they used the wiki to learn.

  • YouTube - Just looking up ROBLOX scripting tutorials you will immediately get nearly 30,000 results, even the basics of scripting from ROBLOX. I have used YouTube every now and then and it probably will help you find mistakes in your work since it provides more visual aids.

  • Free Models - Alright you might be thinking, I don't want my game to get called out for Free Models. You can always learn from scripts, sometimes it just helps to be able to translate a script, see what goes where or how a portion of the script works. Just learning from other people's experience will make you a much better scripter easily.

  • Scripting Helpers - We're always here to help. We do not take requests, but if you're ever have problems with a script you can always come to us for advice or help solve a problem. We are here to be a good community filled with people passionate about scripting and will be willing to help anyone who may need it.

I learned from Free Models early on, then started building up from there.

It's very generous if someone were to teach you everything about scripting, but most people you meet won't do it. A helpful place to start out is here. This tutorial begins from the very beginnings of basic scripting, and will get you started on developing games. Happy scripting!

Thx

We do not take requests, and most people you meet will say "ah noob" or something. But there's a few people that can help. I'm going to show you where to start.

Let's say you are a great scripter (not really but put it like that) and want to make a Pokémon/RP game with levels, but you need to learn how to create objects. Here, we want to make a DoubleConstrainedValue for the moves. (although there's other ways, this is 1 way.) We should do:

Instance.new("DoubleConstrainedValue")

but the script doesn't know how to get that value. how about this?

local level = Instance.new("DoubleConstrainedValue", Starterpack) -- we need it to be with the player -- when he or she spawns.

that makes it so level means DoubleConstrainedValue. we need a max level and a minimum level. So lets do this:

level.MaxValue = (100) -- change it to what ya like for the max level to be
level.MinValue = (5) -- change it to what ya like for the min. level to be
level.Value = game:GetService("DataStoreService")
DataStore:GetData("PlayerData") -- I'm not sure of this but I think it gets the player's level.

oh, oh, we are going wAAAy advanced. Lets start with making a message. (read the above last)

local plr = game.Players.LocalPlayer
game.Players.PlayerAdded:connect(function(plr)
m = Instance.new("Message", Workspace)
m.Text = "howdy,"..plr.MembershipType.."member!"
wait(6)
m:Destroy()
print (plr.Name..'Joined.')
end)

line 1 describes what plr means. LocalPlayer means "the player the script is talk'n 'bout." line 2 just repeats this script everytime someone plays the game. line 3 makes the message and its parent is Workspace. line 4 makes the message say Howdy, None/BuildersClub/TurboBuildersClub/OutrageousBuildersClub member! line5 makes it wait before destroying it so you get a chance to see the message. line6 DESTROYS IT (hence my username) line7 finally tells who joined and line 8 just ends the script.

Woah, that was a lot. After you take a break, check these out, YouTube -- excellent site if you want demo videos. Google -- search anything into the bar and get instant results! Roblox Wiki -- type something you have a problem with in the bar and pulls up instant articles that have loads of tutorials. (my head spins when I finish reading them) Yours truly, Scripting helpers -- we help you with codes that you put in your game, but are unsure/sure that the script is messed up.

Hope this helped! the limits of the lua language are the limits of your world -- famous quote I edited to match this occasion. I would recommend the wiki for searching on tutorials.

If you are just wanting to know how to script, this is not the place to go. I know a few people that will help tutor you and guide you. In the future, please do not post here unless you are going to make a request for others to assist you with.

Try some of the links that M39a9am3R suggested, along with others.

Have a Great Scripttastical Day!
