When making a script to ragdoll a player, do you replace the player's character with a clone?

I am thinking about making a script where you press a key and it makes the character ragdoll without dying, but I am not sure how to go about doing it.

I've seen some scripts that just turn off BreakJointsOnDeath and add BallSocketConstraints to the character on death, but I want to be able to turn the ragdoll on and off without the character dying.

My question is, are you supposed to make a clone of the player's character and replace it with the original body, and vice versa when un-ragdolling, or do you turn the player's character into the ragdoll?

No, you don't need to create a character clone, it is done just how you described it.
