What is a MetaTable and how would I use it?

I have been seeing this for a while now in Lua and still do not know anything about it. Could anyone enlighten me?

Metatables. Metatables allow tables to become more powerful than before. They are attached to data and contain values called metamethods. Metamethods are fired when a certain action is used with the datum that it is attached to.
