When the players join, their inventory, levels and money usually get loaded with no trouble. However, if DataStoreService happens to fail, I want to make sure that they don't panic and think that they lost their progress. Should I give them the default inventory and warn them that their data didn't load or should I just kick them from the game and ask them to rejoin?

What should I do to a player if the datastore service fails?

Well, I would keep trying to load their data, over and over, with a pcall() like greatneil80 said, tell the player, and disable saving. Keep trying, and while you're trying, display a GUI with something along the lines of: "Data cannot be loaded right now, you can play as a new game, your old save WILL NOT BE OVERWRITTEN" And then DO NOT overwrite the other save data on exit.

loop pcall a few times to see if the data can be retrieved, maybe if there was an error.. create backup data just in case... kicking them wouldn't be a good idea because a new player will be autokicked each time they join..
