How to Make it so you always have to have a item equipped?

I was wondering how you could make it so you could switch between items in the backpack but could not be holding nothing, so you always have to be holding something. I am really new to scripting so this would help a lot with me trying to understand. (For a reference) the kind of backpack in Shooter games where they are always holding something.
